We all want to receive the most value for our investments. This stands especially true when you consider expensive items like your HVAC. You can extend the life of your HVAC by a number of years through regular service and repairs from a trusted HVAC contractor. Ultimately, however, you will need to replace your HVAC with a new system. Pay attention to these signs to know when it’s time for a new HVAC.
Simple old age represents the most frequently cited reason for HVAC replacement. If you take especially good care of your system, you can generally expect about 20 years of reliable service. Beyond this, however, the expense of upkeep and repair generally makes maintenance a bad investment. If you need repairs on an annual basis for your aged HVAC, it’s time for a new system.
If your utility bills have begun to steadily increase, you can probably blame your HVAC. As parts wear out and the unit begins to age, HVACs will naturally lose their efficiency. While regular maintenance can offset this, the day will come when your utility bills indicate the need for a new HVAC. Also, if you need to continually set your thermostat higher or lower to achieve the desired temperature, it means that your HVAC has begun to struggle. This will lead to higher bills, as the increased work from the HVAC also requires more energy.
Unusual Sounds or Odors
If your HVAC has begun to emit noxious smells or disturbing sounds, call for immediate service. These signs definitely indicate a repair need, and can also signify when an HVAC is on its last leg. Burning smells, in particular, present a real cause for concern. As for sounds, anything out of the ordinary should at least prompt a call for inspection. A trained HVAC expert can readily determine whether repair can benefit your unit, or if you need full replacement.
